Cyberbullying is bullying with the use of digital technologies. It can take place on social media, messaging platforms, gaming platforms and mobile phones. It is repeated behaviour, aimed at scaring, angering or shaming those who are targeted. It can take several forms such as: spreading lies, posting embarrassing photos, sending hurtful messages or threats, or impersonating the victim and sending mean messages to others. Stopping cyberbullying is not just about calling out bullies, it’s also about recognising that everyone deserves respect – online and in real life.
What the Church says...
Cyberbullying creates anger, anxiety and enmity. Pope Francis reminds us to use the internet and social media to promote friendship. The Pope says:
“Friendship is no fleeting or temporary relationship, but one that is stable, firm and faithful, and matures with the passage of time.
“A relationship of affection that brings us together and a generous love that makes us seek the good of our friend.
“Friends may be quite different from one another, but they always have things in common that draw them closer in mutual openness and trust” (CV.152).
What the Bible says...
“For the Spirit that God has given us does not make us timid; instead, his Spirit fills us with power, love, and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7).
It may sometimes feel that cyber-bullies have the power to ruin our day, but that power is only in them because we give it to them. The power is not in the offence, but in the one who receives it. God has given us a spirit to tackle the power of bitterness and hate and counter it with God’s love and assurance.
When we see bullies for who they really are, it’s obvious that their actions are only based on a lack of affirmation and affection that they wish to receive from us. Don’t feed their hunger for attention with hate. Respond instead in love, and sometimes that may mean not responding at all. By our own strength it’s hard to hold back, but it’s never about our own ability. It’s the Holy Spirit working through us. When Jesus controls our reactions, prepare to be surprised by how much love we can show towards the worst of online bullies.
Reflection
The first line of defence against cyberbullying could be you. There are many ways you can help: by raising your voice, calling out bullies, reaching out to trusted adults or by creating awareness of the issue. If you are worried about your safety or something that has happened to you online, urgently speak to an adult you trust. Ignore all the messages from a bully, moderate your comments on social media and protector modify your settings. Remember three simple steps: block, mute and report cyberbullying!

Prayer for the Bullies
God of Love, your word declares that anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. I pray for those who are in the darkness right now, for those who choose to hate over love, and choose intimidation over respect. I pray for bullies right now, please touch their hearts. Lord, please let your light shine upon them and eradicate the darkness that surrounds them.
Amen
