Good leaders are people who have overcome challenges in life to become people who others look up to. When their lives display integrity, passion and selfless devotion, their stories inspire us to believe that we can achieve something similar ourselves. Such leaders are made, not born.
Without making headlines, many leaders begin their formation at the everyday level of family, school, or community. They endeavour to see, understand and do quietly what’s needed to improve and enrich the lives of those they freely commit themselves to. As role models, their actions are amplified many times over in those who imitate their example.
What the Bible says...
Christian leaders take their cue from Jesus. His life of simplicity and his dedication to the poor and marginalised embodies a timeless grace and beauty that moves others deeply.
Beyond social status, education and talent, Jesus demonstrates that loving God and our fellow human beings with courage and compassion is what truly matters in leadership.
Jesus displayed two leadership qualities in particular, for us to learn from: a readiness to serve and a willingness to sacrifice.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served; he came to serve and to give his life to redeem many people” (Mark 10:45).
Christian leaders must have the heart of a servant and be prepared to face adversity and rejection with patience, fortitude and a living hope.
Are you called to be a leader?
God called Moses at the age of 80, from his self-isolation, to lead his people on a hazardous journey out of slavery to freedom. The Lord called sleepy Samuel to be a prophet when he was 12 years old. Mary was a teenager when the angel told her she was chosen to be the mother of God’s only begotten Son. Age doesn’t disqualify a person from leadership.
God may call you to serve and lead for a reason, for a season or for a lifetime. Like Jeremiah, don’t say: “I’m just a young person!” Or like Moses: “I am poor.” Or like Peter: “I am a sinful man.” All were flawed individuals to begin with. God doesn’t call the qualified; God qualifies the called.
Like Isaiah, dare to say:
“Here I am, Lord! Send me!”
